President Donald Trump and billionaire entrepreneur Elon Musk used to be on good terms, almost forming an alliance of sorts. But today we find that they are at odds publically. At the centre of this feud is the Big Beautiful Bill. The bill has created a polarization among political and business figures all over the world.
Billionaire entrepreneur and former head of what used to be the Department of Government Efficiency has been publicly opposed to the bill. He has called the bill “a disgusting abomination”. He has condemned both the economic and political aspects of the bill. Musk and Trump , who once were part of a strategic alliance, are now at the centre of a public political feud. This conflict may have far reaching implications for U.S. politics, technology industry’s relations with the government, and Musk’s personal political ambitions.
What is The Big, Beautiful Bill?
The One Big Beautiful Bill is a large scare legislative move that is a combines tax reforms, corporate subsidies, and spending incentives. The bill is promoted by Trump as pushing “prosperity through patriotism”. What has offended Musk and other opposers of the bill are the red flags hidden within the 2300 pages of the bill. The legislation cuts down on many provisions aimed towards greener and cleaner infrastructure. It notably reduces electric cuts down on (EV) subsidies, renewable energy tax credits, and shifts federal contracts away from clean technology programs toward more traditional, less clean energy infrastructure. It also adds over $2.4 trillion to the national deficit over the next ten years, according to an analysis by the Congressional Budget Office.

Why Elon Musk Is Opposed To It
A complex combination of principles and personal interests drive Musk’s opposition towards the Big Beautiful Bill. Clean energy solutions and innovations have long been promoted by Musk
During his brief tenure heading the DOGE, he put heavy emphasis on clean and green energy solutions. According to Musk, the Big Beautiful Bill alone undoes much of this progress.
In a number of tweets and interviews, Elon Musk has called this bill “reckless” on many accounts. Musk has opposed it and claimed that it is extremely apathetic towards green energy. He fears that the increase in deficit that the bill causes would lead to inflation and instability of their currency. He believes that it would lead to an erosion of public trust in the government and its policies.
However, this opposition by Musk also has a more personal angle. Two of Musk’s major ventures, Tesla and SpaceX greatly rely on government incentives on electric vehicles and clean energy. The bill intends to decrease incentives in green energy and redirect the government funds to traditional energy sources. This potentially means Musk losing billions of dollars in future revenue.
From Allies to Adversaries
The feud, which originated from policy differences, soon escalated and turned into personal jabs and attacks. Musk has claimed that without his support, Trunk wouldn’t have won the 2024 presidential elections.
Trump, as a response, called Musk “a megalomaniac rocket man turned traitor.” Trump has also reportedly got senior officials to review all Federal contracts of Musk’s companies. This includes sensitive national security deals of the US government with SpaceX. Though there haven’t been any official cancelling of contracts as of now, analysts that these moves of passive aggression signal a retreat of Musk-led companies from their government partnerships.
In another rather personal attack, Musk has also claimed without evidence that Trump has not been completely honest and transparent about his relations with the controversial figure Jeffrey Epstein.
A New Political Venture: The America Party
With the deepening of the feud, Musk has made a bold move by announcing a new political entity of his own, “The America Party.” According to Musk, this will be a centrist organisation that will voice the “politically homeless majority,” those who have lost their faith in both traditional Republican and Democratic parties.
With the deepening of the feud, Musk has made a bold move by announcing a new political entity of his own, “The America Party.” According to Musk, this will be a centrist organisation that will voice the “politically homeless majority,” those who have lost their faith in both traditional Republican and Democratic parties.
The new America Party promotes a central policy of finance reform, universal basic services, active investments in science and infrastructure. It also aims to make the USA a carbon-neutral economy by 2045. Critics have not given the party much importantance of respect, many calling it simply a vanity project. However, some believe that Musk’s deep pockets and wife online influence could help the party gain importance. Some believe that young supporters, if influenced properly, will rally well for the new party.
This move of creating a new party has not only positioned Musk as a Trump adversary but has also created considerable ripples across both the political camps. Some moderate Republicans and independents are reportedly reconsidering their allegiances. Although Elon Musk has not declared intentions to be a presidential candidate yet, analysts anticipate that he might be a candidate in the upcoming elections.
