The aviation industry is facing yet another challenge of its safety procedures with the crash of Air India Flight 171 on 12th June 2025. The crash happened in Ahmedabad, India. The aircraft was Boeing 787-8 and was carrying 242 passengers which also included 12 crew members. The aircraft crashed shortly after taking off from Ahmedabad International Airport. The aircraft, which was bound to go to London Gatwick, lost touch with air traffic control barely minutes after takeoff. It then crashed into the Meghani Nagar neighborhood, causing a smoke cloud that could be seen from miles away. 

Air travel is one of the most safest modes of transportation, still some aviation plane crashes have left deepest scars in the world’s memory. This most recent accident is only one more in a long line of big aviation mishaps that show how difficult it is to make flying experience safe, even with new technology. The following list looks at 10 of the most major commercial aviation crashes that have happened in the past decade.

1. Jeju Air Flight 2216

Casualties: 179
Date of Crash: 29th December 2024

This is the most recent and devastating accident in the aviation history. This took place on December 29th 2024 when a boeing aircraft 737-800 which was operated by Jeju Air was travelling from Bankok, Thailand to Seoul, South Korea. It met with an accident while trying to do an emergency landing at Muan Airport. Sadly, all 175 passengers including four of the six crew members died when the jet belly-landed, went off the runway, and hit a wall, causing a fire. Two members of the crew were able to survive.

2. Azerbaijan Airlines Flight 8243

Casualties: 38

Date of Crash: 25th December 2024

The Azerbaijan Airlines Flight J2-8243 was travelling from Baku to Grozny, Russia, met with an accident close to Aktau in Kazakhstan. This happened on 25th December 2024. The crash resulted in 39 deaths and 29 passengers were able to survive this crash. President Ilham Aliyev of Azerbaijan said that the plane was from the ground in Russia. Reports pointed out that it had problems with speed & altitude. Thia may have been caused by a mechanical failure & then this led to an emergency declaration. The weather was bad, with thick fog making things worse.

3. China Eastern Airlines Flight 5735

Casualties: 132

Date of Crash: 21st March 2022

During a domestic flight from Kunming to Guangzhou it crashed. The aircraft entered a steep dive & then crashed into mountainous terrains. The cause is still being looked at. The early reports point to possibly intentional activity.

4. Ukraine International Airlines Flight 752

Casualties: 176

Date of Crash: 8th January 2020

Among the increased tension between Iran and the United States, the aircraft was shot by surface-to-air missile of Iran shortly after it took off from Tehran.  No one survived on this flight.

5. Pakistan International Airlines Flight 8303

Casualties: 97

Date of Crash: 22nd May 2020

While the aircraft was trying to land at Karachi Airport it got crashed into a residential area in Karachi. The pilots tried to go-around after they had a failed first initial landing attempt.

6. Bek Air Flight 2100

Casualties: 13

Date of Crash: 27th December 2019

When the flight crashed near Almaty the aircraft had 95 passengers and five crew members in it. The Bek Air Plane crashed near the city of Almaty in Kazakhstan with 95 passengers and 5 crew members on 27th December 2019. As per reports from Central Asian country this happened shortly after taking off, this killed atleast 12 people. Kazakhstan’s Civil Aviation Committee said in a statement that The Fokker 100 plane was flying to the capital, Nur-Sultan, before daybreak when it “lost altitude during takeoff & then broke through a concrete fence” before hitting a two-story structure or building.

7. Ethiopian Airlines Flight 302

Casualties: 157

Date of Crash: 10Th March 2019

This flight crashed shortly after taking off from Addis Ababa. This aircraft also had same Maneuvering Characteristics problem as the Lion Air 610 (mentioned below) which led to this crash. This resulted into 157 fatalities.

8. Lion Air Flight 610

Casualties: 189

Date of Crash: 29th October 2018

The flight took off from Jakarta and shortly after that it crashed. All the 181 passengers and 8 crew members were declared dead who were all on board. This was first of two major accidents which happened with 737 MAX which led to grounding of this aircraft type.

9. Metrojet Flight 9268

Casualties: 224

Date of Crash: 31st October 2015

The Airbus aircraft A321-231 took off from Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt which was bound o go to St. Petersburg, Russia. It broke off in flight shortly after the take off. Later on investigation showed the crash happened due to an onboard explosive device. The plane was carrying 217 passengers and there were 7 crew members too.

10. Germanwings Flight 9525

Casualties: 150

Date of Crash: 24th March 2015

The crash happened due to co-pilot. The co-pilot of this aircraft deliberately crashed it into mountains during its descent from Barcelona to Dusseldrof. After this tragic incident in aviation history it led to major and beneficial changes in cockpit security protocols and other things worldwide.
