How SSDI Payments Are Calculated

SSDI is always based on the history of your prior work and the average lifetime earning you have had.

How much amount you have paid in the social security taxes.

A formula is used by the SSA based on your primary insurance amount, PIA, calculated from your highest 35 years of indexed earnings.

Work Limits: SGA Thresholds in 2025

You must not be earning above the substantial gainful activity, SGA limits, and these limits are as follows.

Category2024 SGA2025 SGA
Non-Blind Individuals$1,550/month$1,620/month
Blind Individuals$2,590/month$2,700/month

If you are someone who is earning above the thresholds that are set by the government, then the SSA may terminate your SSDI benefits unless and until you are in a trial work period, TWP.

Trial Work Period (TWP) 2025 Limits

SSA gives you complete freedom to test your ability to work without immediately terminating your benefits, and this is called a trial work period.

In 2025, any month in which you have earned over $1110 will be counted as trial work month, and you get 90 trial months over a rolling 61 period. After this trial work period ends, the SSA will monitor your income to determine whether you are still eligible or not.

When Will You Receive SSDI Payments in 2025

SSDI payments are made on a monthly basis, which are completely based on your birth date, not the date you become disabled. Here is a general video that is followed by SSDI for your payments.

Birth Date RangePayment Day
1st–10th2nd Wednesday
11th–20th3rd Wednesday
21st–31st4th Wednesday

One thing to note is, if you are someone who is also receiving SSI, then your SSDI will be paid on the 1st of each month.

Will You Get a Bigger SSDI Check in 2025

Yes, but how much more will totally depend on your current benefit level.

The COLA notices that will be given from the SSA will tell you exactly the new benefits in December 2024. For now, 2.5% increase in the COLA has been set and with this increase you will see increase in your benefits.

What About Back Pay or Retroactive Benefits

If you are someone who has been newly approved by the SSDI in the year 2025, then you may receive retroactive benefits going back to up to 12 months before your application date. And these benefits will completely depend on when your disability begins. All these retroactive payments that will be made to you will also reflect the 2.5% GONA if they are anyway covering any month of the year 2025.

A modest boost is being given to the beneficiaries by the new 2025 SSDI pay charts thanks to the 2.5% increase in the COLA. While it’s not a huge difference, it will definitely help offset rising costs, especially to those who are completely relying on their disability checks. To get the most out of your benefit, you need to stay under the SGA income limits. Watch for any updated payment notices that arrive in the month of December. Review your MySSA account regularly. If you have any kind of question or query related to SSDI status or eligibility, you can directly contact the SSA office or visit your local social security office.
