As Education Director at the FCC, Steve Midgley was responsible for the education section of the National Broadband Plan, submitted to Congress in March. Steve will share an insider's insights into the plan's significance for higher education and research, open issues, what we can expect to happen when and potential roles for research and education networks.

The Illinois Century Network Perspective: Equipping our States and Communities with Broadband and the Resulting Synergies with R&E

Lori Sorenson oversees the administration and technology strategy for the Illinois Century Network, which connects over 8,000 schools, libraries, healthcare providers, museums, municipalities and state agencies throughout Illinois and serves more than 2 million citizens every day with high-speed access to video, data and audio communications.

Lori will speak on the successes and lessons learned about broadband-enabling state and local government and community anchor institutions, the model Illinois has adopted and why – and the resulting impact. Also addressed will be how the assets and expertise of a research and education network like NLR could support the Illinois Century Network in their objectives and the mutual synergies and shared opportunities ahead of us.
